Interviewing for Residency



This is a video created by The University of Texas School of Medicine at Houston. The content is excellent. It does not hurt you to Know as much as you can about the art of interview. Remember, a residency is a job. The competition is really hard not only for International Medical Graduates, but it is difficult for U.S. graduates too. You have to be prepared to feel confident during your interviews.

Questions you can ask to faculty members:
  • What percentage of your first year residents complete the program?
  • What percentage of the graduates of your program are board certified?
  • What percentage of the graduates of your program go on to do fellowships?
  • How do you evaluate your residents?
  • What is the financial position of the teaching hospital?
Bad Interview:
  • Tell me about yourself?
  • What is wrong in this interview?
  • Can you find more mistakes made by this applicant?
  • Was he prepared?
  • Are the questions adequate?
Good Interview:
  • What is good about this interview?
  • What are you looking in this program?
  • Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
  • What do you think about her answers?
  • Does she know the program? Why?
Do not forget:
  • Non-verbal language is very important.
  • Be polite.
  • Be interested.
  • Be sincere.
  • Be prepared.

Excellent resource, so far is the best tool that I have seen for the interview. I think that I will write down my possible answers and then I'll practice, practice and practice.
